Editorial Evaluation

Surely among the many most endearing of all Dr. Seuss creations, Horton the Elephant represents kindness, trustworthiness, and perseverance–all wrapped up, thank goodness, in a comical and even absurd package deal. Horton hears a cry for help from a speck of mud, and spends much of the e-book trying to give protection to the infinitesimal creatures who live on it from the derision and trickery of alternative animals, who suppose their elephant pal has long past rather nutty. But worse is in store: an eagle includes away the clover by which Horton has positioned the life-bearing speck, and “let that small clover drop someplace within / of an excellent patch of clovers 100 miles broad!” Horton wins in any case, after persuading the “Who's” to make as much noise as possible and prove their existence. This traditional is just not only fun, but a good way to introduce considerate youngsters to basically philosophical questions. How, in the end, are we so sure there aren't invisible civilizations floating through on each mote? (Ages 4 to eight) –Richard Farr
